Frequently Asked Questions

•  Why should I choose a pediatric surgeon for my child’s surgery?
Pediatric surgeons are surgeons who have undergone extra three year training for pediatric surgery after their general surgery training. Some of them further undergo training for pediatric urology, pediatric oncosurgery etc. They are trained to operate on neonates and children. You can be assured that your child is in safe hands.
•  What should I bring with me to an office appointment?
When you come for your appointment, please bring your child’s medical records and any imaging studies. Please bring your original studies with you, if possible. During your office visit, our doctors will examine your child. If surgery is required, it will be scheduled at a later date.
•  What is day care surgery?
We understand that no one, including children, like hospitals.Your child does not need to stay in the hospital overnight after all surgeries. Day care surgery means that the child comes to the hospital in morning for surgery and gets discharged on the same day by evening. Mostly the sutures are absorbable and don’t need daily dressings. Some common daycare surgeries are for hernia, undescended testis, phimosis, surgery for hypospadias, tounge-tie, lymph node biopsy, abcess drainage, etc. I hope you understand that the surgery needs to be planned and cannot be done on the day of first OPD visit
•  What are the steps I need to take to prepare my child for surgery?
Being there for your child before, during and after surgery is the most important thing you can do to help him or her. Surgery can be a very stressful time; your support helps your child maintain the highest level of emotional health.
You may also want to do the following to prepare your child for surgery:
-- Take extra precautions to avoid cough and cold or fever before surgery. Don’t scare your child about surgery. Bring all relevant investigations even if they have been seen by your doctor.
-- Make a list of questions about your child’s diagnosis and treatment and bring that list to your appointments with your doctor.
-- Bring some of your child’s favorite things with you for his or her stay at the hospital. Those comfort items might include family photos, books, favorite toys or stuffed animals, music and a portable music player.
•  Can I stay with my child at the hospital?
Unless your child is admitted to Neonatal or Pediatric ICU you can always stay with your child.
•  What should I do to care for my child after surgery?
Your doctor will provide you the instructions you should follow after your child’s surgery. These instructions will be specific to your child’s type of surgery and his or her individualized care plan. We will arrange a follow-up appointment with you in advance, if needed. If your child has any issues like fever or pain after you return home, please call us.
•  My child has already been operated. Can I come for an opinion?
Ideally your primary surgeon is the best person to advice regarding any unfortunate post-surgery complication. But you can always come for a second opinion. Don’t forget to bring all relevant documents including surgical notes of the primary surgeon. If there is anything else you want to know regarding your child’s surgical illness kindly mail us or give a call.
